Poas Volcano + Coffee Plantations + La Paz Waterfall Garden

Sue’s top pick for a day trip:

The La Paz Waterfall Gardens is about an hour north of the airport on the south slope of the Poas volcano. It’s magical! I take all my guests there and some have visited a second and third time. It’s about an hour north of the airport. There is a large bird enclosure, a trout pond, a butterfly enclosure, hummingbirds, rescued monkeys and big cats, and much more, not to mention a very well constructed trail along five huge waterfalls with lookout areas – 30 min to an hour, depending on how many stops you make for picture taking (there are quite a few stairs, but mostly downhill). At the end there’s a bar, a great souvenir store, and a bus to take you back to the reception area. This is a great time of year to see the Poas volcano before going to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens.

Tour includes: Transportation, breakfast, lunch, entrance fees, and a certified guide

Difficulty level: moderate

Arenal Volcano + Hot Springs

Sue’s top pick for an overnight trip:

Tabacon Hot Springs out of La Fortuna is about a 2.5 hr. drive. There are other hot springs at the Arenal volcano, but none I have been to can equal Tabacon’s breathtaking landscaping and the rock ledge where you can sit under a waterfall and get a hot water massage pounding on your back, and much more.

You can sometimes hear the Arenal volcano rumbling… the source of the hot springs. A lucky few get to see fire coming out of the cone at night. It is still considered active, but there hasn’t been an eruption since 2010.

Tour includes: Transportation, lunch, dinner, entrance fees, and a certified guide

Difficulty level: easy

Manuel Antonio National Park

Sue’s beach pick:

For a destination to the beach, Manuel Antonio, a national park, is another very popular destination with beautiful white sand beaches.

Tour includes: Transportation, breakfast, lunch, entrance fees, and a certified guide

Difficulty level: easy/moderate

Additional Recommendations from Sue:

The botanical gardens are also nice day trips, one in Sarchi in the hill country north of the airport, the orchid garden in La Garita a few miles west of the airport, and the Lancaster Garden in Paraiso east of Cartago.
