Why Choose Dental Implants Over Dentures?

Choose Dental Implants

Over time, people may unfortunately lose a significant number of teeth or even all of their teeth. Obviously, this affects their quality of life greatly as they are unable to eat certain kinds of food and may even suffer pain when eating. Teeth are also important to maintain the shape of your face and for clear speech.

In the past, dentists prescribed dentures for these cases. However, there is now another alternative: dental implants. Dental implants are quickly substituting dentures as the solution that many patients are choosing for recovering from severe dental loss. Here’s why:

1. Dental Implants Function Like Natural Teeth

Dentures tend to have a “chewy” feeling to them. When you chew, they can go up and down or even sideways a bit. Not enough to make it hard to eat, but enough to make it noticeable, making you self-conscious about every bite you take, at least until you get used to them. Also, depending on your jaw and the accuracy of the fit, your dentures still may not allow you to eat certain kinds of food.

Dental implants on the other hand, function as if you had your natural teeth back. They are stable because they are literally implanted into your jawbone and they obtain their support and strength from your jaw.

2. Dental Implants Are Fixed

Dentures are not fixed and need to be removed for cleaning. At times they may need to be re-adjusted while eating, which can be inconvenient, painful or embarrassing. You don’t want to have to excuse yourself in the middle of a meal just because a seed got stuck between your gum and the denture. On the other hand, dental implants are fixed and do not need to be removed any more that natural teeth do.

3. Dental Implants Require Little Maintenance

Dentures must be taken out at night and require daily cleaning. They may also require additional cleaning during the day depending on their use.

Except in rare circumstances, dental implants do not require extra maintenance other than your normal dental hygiene and a couple of visits to your dentist each year. This is yet another reason why people with implants tend to forget them and just go on with their lives.

4. Dental Implants Typically Last for Life

Dentures sometimes have to be changed due to changes in your jaw and gums as you age. Sometimes they break. But once you get dental implants, you typically have them for life. While dental implants require a greater investment, they are worth it since you are basically solving tooth loss permanently in addition to the strength, stability, ease of maintenance and comfort.

5. Dental Implants Can Be Customized

There are several types of dental solutions involving dental implants, such as All-on-4, All-on-5 and All-on-6. Your dentist will help you choose the best one for you and your specific needs after studying your case.  And once the procedure is finished, you’ll be able to eat anything you want easily, as if you were chewing with your natural teeth.
