Are Most Healthy People Able to Get Dental Implants?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is mostly yes, but there are a few exceptions, and they’re usually not permanent.

Why wouldn’t someone who’s healthy not be able to get dental implants? It sounds counter-intuitive, but once you hear what the exceptions are, you’ll understand why it makes sense.

The first set of people who don’t qualify for dental implants include children and teenagers who haven’t finished growing. Since dental implants are attached to the jawbone, it makes sense to wait until the jawbone has attained its maximum size. Otherwise, the growth of the jawbone would twist the inclination of the implants and cause them to fail. Worse, it could also cause damage to the jawbone, which would make it difficult to get implants once they’re adults.

The next set of people include pregnant women. Since pregnancy is a temporary situation by its nature, it makes sense to wait until a woman has given birth. Otherwise we’d be subjecting the woman to minor surgery while pregnant.

Lastly, smoking and drinking, even if they are done in moderation and haven’t caused diseases, can disqualify you from receiving implants. However, this is rare. On the other hand, you might have to stop smoking or drinking, at least for a while before you can be considered as a candidate for dental implants. Unfortunately, some patients start smoking or drinking before they are advised to and, as a result, they end up losing their dental implants.

It’s interesting to notice that despite common misconception, old age is not a factor that disqualifies you from dental implants. Many senior citizens that have been using dentures for years simply do not apply for dental implants because they think “I’m too old for them.” If you are healthy, your age is not important.

In the end, you can see that the reasons why some groups of healthy people can’t get dental implants make sense and they’re mostly a matter of waiting or changing their behavior anyway. Aside from those exceptions, pretty much anyone who is healthy can get dental implants.
